NWT Environmental Audit Released to Public

YELLOWKNIFE, NWT ( June 22, 2006) - The first-ever NWT Environmental Audit report was released today by the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.
The audit is a requirement under Part VI of the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act to evaluate the quality of the environment in the Mackenzie Valley. The audit looks at how environmental change is monitored and how land and water are managed in the Northwest Territories. It is intended to ensure that responsible economic development occurs within a sound environmental management framework.
"Indian and Northern Affairs Canada welcomes the completion of this audit and its recommendations. It will be important for INAC, other federal departments, the territorial government, resource management boards and Aboriginal governments and organizations to consider these recommendations very carefully," said Minister Prentice. "A great deal of effort went into this audit, including the hard work and diligence of the Audit Sub-Committee. I would like to thank the members of the sub-committee for supporting the independent auditor throughout this process."
There are 50 recommendations contained in the audit. The responsibility for addressing the audit's recommendations will be shared among as many as 25 directly affected parties, including government, agencies and resource management boards. These recommendations are intended to be used by decision-makers to improve the effectiveness of the regulation of environmental and resource management in the NWT.
The audit was conducted by an independent auditor appointed by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, following a competitive bidding process and review by the audit sub-committee, composed of representatives from regional Aboriginal, territorial and federal governments. SENES (Specialists in Energy, Nuclear and Environmental Sciences) Consultants Limited was chosen to carry out the audit.
