OTTAWA, July 5, 2006 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded $30,000 to the Iskut Band Council to support its participation in the environmental assessment of the proposed Galore Creek Copper-Gold-Silver Mine project in British Columbia.
A Participant Funding Review Committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to examine the request for funding received for this project. All of the Committee's recommendations are unanimous and are contained in the report of the Funding Review Committee. The report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under registry number 05-03-8858.
This funding is being provided to assist the recipient to participate in the comprehensive study process and/or in the review of the comprehensive study report to be submitted by the responsible authorities, namely Natural Resources Canada, Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The funding is made available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency.
NovaGold Resources Inc. is proposing to construct and operate a copper-gold-silver open-pit mine approximately 350 km northwest of Terrace. The proposed project would include an access road, ore concentrate slurry pipeline, transmission line, processing plant, airstrip, waste rock storage and supporting infrastructure.
