Hudson, August 23, 2006 - Yvon Marcoux,
Quebec's Ministre de la Justice and Member of the National Assembly for
Vaudreuil, on behalf of Nathalie Normandeau, Ministre des Affaires
municipales et des Régions, and the Honourable Michael Fortier,
Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister responsible for
the Montreal Region, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn,
Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, are
pleased to announce that the City of Hudson will receive $9,837,622 under the
Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) to carry out major water
infrastructure work.
The first portion of the work involves large-scale sewage
collection, interception and treatment. Sewage collection work will be carried
out in the broader central sector and the Bellevue-Sanderson-Parsons sector. It
will include the laying of a sanitary network in the streets located inside the
sectors' urban area boundaries, the installation of pumping stations (four in
the broader sector and three in the Bellevue sector), and the installation of a
connection pipeline between the Bellevue sector and the purification plant.
Treatment work includes the construction of a purification plant and extension
of the sewer outfall.
The second portion of the work primarily involves the treatment of
drinking water, installation of a drinking water storage reservoir, including
the construction of a building, as well as replacement of the chlorination
equipment. This work will bring the drinking water treatment infrastructure up
to standard, improve water supply services as well as the quality of the
environment and drinking water. The completed project will benefit some
1,300 people.
The project will require a total investment of $15,488,584, of
which $14,096,309 is eligible under component 1 of the MRIF. Thus, the
Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada will each contribute
$4,918,811 toward the project for a total of $9,837,622 in combined
government funding, while the City of Hudson will contribute $4,258,687, in
addition to $1,392,275 for a total of $5,650,962.
Hudson Mayor Elizabeth Corker said she was pleased with
the Government of Quebec's support for this project, which is viewed as a
priority for the development of the city and the well-being of its
residents.
The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is a $390 million
cost-sharing initiative of the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada
to help finance municipal infrastructure projects in Quebec. With the financial
participation of municipalities, this initiative could result in investments of
nearly $576 million for infrastructure work in the province. The objectives
of the MRIF are to upgrade community infrastructure, improve the quality of the
environment, promote long-term economic growth and enhance citizens' quality of
life.
Implementation of the MRIF in Quebec is the result of a joint
agreement signed by the Government of Quebec and the Government of Canada in
July 2005. The program, which is in force until March 31, 2010,
is administered by Quebec's Ministère des Affaires municipales et des Régions.
Canada Economic Development is responsible for delivering the federal
portion of the MRIF
on behalf of the Government of Canada.
