OTTAWA, ONTARIO— October 1st marked the International Day of Older Persons. This year, the United Nations chose the theme, "Improving the Quality of Life for Older Persons: Advancing UN Global Strategies."
United Nations' objectives for the day included the promotion of positive images of aging and the promotion of the development of appropriate aging policies, the identification of innovative initiatives for enhancing the living conditions of seniors, and the recognition of older persons' contribution to society.
In the next 35 years, the number of seniors in Canada will double to almost 9 million people representing approximately one quarter of the population.
"Canada's seniors have given a lifetime of dedication, hard work and experience to our country. They deserve our utmost respect," said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and the federal Minister Responsible for Seniors. "Canada's New Government, has and will continue to provide the support for our seniors to live in peace and dignity."
Canadian seniors will benefit from a number of initiatives contained in the 2006 Budget. For example, the Government's increase of the maximum amount eligible for the pension income credit to $2,000 will help nearly 2.7 million taxpayers and will remove approximately 85,000 pensioners from the tax rolls this tax year. As well, tax relief for individuals will help 655,000 low-income Canadians, including many seniors, to be removed from the tax rolls altogether.
The Government is also improving the lives of Canadian seniors by facilitating the receipt of pension benefits in Canada from other countries. Internationally, Canada is an acknowledged leader in ensuring social protection for seniors who have immigrated to Canada from other countries. Canada has signed 50 agreements with countries from six continents. "These agreements help Canadians and citizens of signatory countries qualify for benefits they might not otherwise be entitled to receive," said Minister Finley. "This can only benefit their quality of life in retirement."
Canada is a proud signatory to the 2002 Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which is scheduled for review in 2007. Canada will use that opportunity to report to the UN Commission for Social Development on the substantial efforts made by governments, stakeholders and communities to prepare for an aging population.
"Seniors have earned the right to enjoy a quality of life that we can all take pride in," said Minister Finley. "Please join me in celebrating International Day of Older Persons."
The United Nations has recognized October 1st as International Day of Older Persons since 1991.
