Winnipeg, MANITOBA – Joy Smith , Member of Parliament for Kildonan-St. Paul, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development , officially opened the new Service Canada Centre for Youth in Winnipeg today . The new Centre for Youth will provide youth and students with greater access to federal government benefits and services year -round .
“Canada’s New Government is committed to helping young Manitobans access the information and services they need to participate in the labour market,” said Ms. Smith. “ Working in partnership with other levels of government and community organizations, this year-round centre will be a one-stop-shop for information on wage rates, financial benefits and jobs, as well as information on other government and community programs.”
This new Centre for Youth in Winnipeg will provide young people with a broad range of services to help youth develop skills, find jobs, gain valuable work experience and stay employed. They will also also be able to access many other services including information on jobs, passports, and financial benefits such as Canada Student Loans, Employment Insurance, and passports.
Service Canada provides Canadians with one-stop, easy-to-access , personalized service. It brings Government of Canada programs and services together in a single delivery network to meet the needs of Canadians, wherever they live. Canadians can access services however they choose; by phone through the 1 800 O-Canada line (1 800 622-6232), on the Internet at servicecanada.gc.ca, by mail, or in person.

Service Canada Centre for Youth

The Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCC-Y) on Portage Avenue is a year-round, in-person service delivery office for youth. It opened its doors on Oct. 18, 2006 , and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. , and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. .
Traditionally, SCC-Y’s across Canada are open from May to August to help students find summer jobs and help employers find summer assistance. This new, year-round Centre for Youth in Winnipeg extends these services and is one of four similar centres across Canada .
Services delivered from the Centre for Youth include in-person Government of Canada services, year-round student job postings and community outreach. The new Centre for Youth is also a referral point for other government and community services. Clients will be able to access information on many areas including:
Canada Education Savings Grant;
Jobs;
Education;
Financial Benefits;
Health;
Housing;
Social Insurance Numbers;
Taxes;
Training and Careers; and
Travel and Passports.
Partnerships are key to the success of the Centre for Youth. The Centre was developed in consultation with youth-serving agencies and in collaboration with other federal departments and levels of government. Some of the partners include: the Manitoba Department of Education, Citizenship and Youth; community youth-serving agencies, and the Winnipeg Youth Intergovernmental Advisory Board.
While the Centre for Youth is mandated for youth, any citizen will be able to access service at the centre.
