OTTAWAHer Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will preside an Order of Canada investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall on Friday, February 9, 2007, at 10:30 a.m.
The Governor General, who is Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order, will present 37 recipients with their insignia of membership. 15 Officers and 22 Members will be invested.
The Order of Canada recognizes people who have made a difference to our country. From local citizens to national and international personalities, all Canadians are eligible for the Order of Canada, our country's highest honour for lifetime achievement. Three different levels of membership honour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope: Companion, Officer and Member.
The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. Appointments are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. The motto of the Order is Desiderantes meliorem patriam (They desire a better country).

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. It is our country's highest honour for lifetime achievement.

Appointments are made on the recommendation of an advisory council, chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. The Governor General is the Chancellor and Principal Companion of the Order.
Membership in the Advisory Council reflects the diversity and excellence in Canadian society. Certain Advisory Council members are appointed by virtue of their office; others are appointed to the Council for a fixed term to achieve a balanced representation of the various regions of the country.

Gerald Barr has demonstrated a strong commitment to community issues and humanitarian causes. Throughout his many years in the labour movement as a local and national representative, he has led, and contributed to, many initiatives, including the Steelworkers Humanity Fund, which was created in response to the Ethiopian famine crisis. Respected for his inspired and inspiring leadership, he has served on many boards, notably those of the North-South Institute, the Make Poverty History campaign and the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group. Today, as president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Council for International Co‑operation, he continues to foster sustainable development and human rights.
Susan Butler, C.M.Miramichi, New BrunswickMember of the Order of Canada
Susan Butler is a committed volunteer, gifted performer and custodian of traditional music. She has organized and performed in countless benefit concerts to raise funds for charitable initiatives at the local, provincial and national levels. As volunteer executive director of the Miramichi Folksong Festival for more than 20 years, she has expanded its scope and relevance, inviting celebrated musicians to join local talent in performing traditional and contemporary folk music. Over the years, she has amassed a great wealth of regional songs and folklore, which she helped publish in songbook format to preserve the musical heritage of the Miramichi.
Brian A. Canfield, C.M., O.B.C.Vancouver, British ColumbiaMember of the Order of Canada
Brian Canfield contributed to the growth and expansion of BC Telecom for over four decades. Joining the company in 1956 as an apprentice, he eventually held the positions of chairman, president and CEO and oversaw the merger with Telus Corporation, creating one of the largest telecommunications firms in the country. He was instrumental in bringing the 1991 British Columbia Summer Games to Coquitlam and in establishing the Coquitlam Foundation. In addition, he has supported the activities of Leadership Vancouver, Science World and the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. He is as admired for his professional foresight and acumen as he is for spearheading community initiatives.
Pierre Daloze, C.M.
Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QuebecMember of the Order of Canada
Pierre Daloze, renowned surgeon, is a pioneer in organ transplantation. He was the first in Canada to perform a liver transplant and the first in the Francophone community to perform a kidney transplant. Founder and director of the transplant unit at Montreal's Notre-Dame Hospital, he also co‑founded Métro-Transplantation (later Québec-Transplant) and the Maison des greffés. Through his actions, he continues to raise awareness of organ donation and to contribute to the health and well‑being of many patients.
Anne Fanning, C.M.Edmonton, AlbertaMember of the Order of Canada
Anne Fanning is a leader in the crusade to eliminate tuberculosis in Canada and around the world. A physician at local hospitals and a teacher at the University of Alberta, she set the touchstone for excellence in patient care and inspires her students with her dedication to duty. She has travelled extensively, sharing her wealth of knowledge with heath care professionals, particularly in Africa, which is facing a dual epidemic of tuberculosis and HIV. Her decades of service with the World Health Organization, Stop TB - Halte à la tuberculose and the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease have helped to protect populations at risk.
Bernard Finkelstein, C.M.Toronto, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Bernard Finkelstein has put his stamp on the Canadian music industry as an impassioned champion of homegrown artists. In 1969, he founded True North Records, Canada's oldest independent record company, to showcase our musicians. In so doing, he paved the way for the establishment of many other independent labels. An industry builder, he has shared his time and talents with the Canadian Music Council, the Canadian Independent Record Production Association and VideoFACT. His gifts for discovering talent, developing artists and promoting music are hallmarks of his vast contributions to Canadian music.
The Honourable Jean-Robert Gauthier, C.M.Ottawa, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Jean-Robert Gauthier helped to put language rights on the map in Canada. Since arriving on the federal political scene in 1972, and until his retirement from the Senate in 2004, he played an important role in advancing issues of vital concern for the future of the Francophonie. In recognition of his commitment, he was appointed honorary chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to the Franco-Ontarian community while contributing to a renewed dialogue between Canada's linguistic communities.
Serge Godin, C.M.Westmount, QuebecMember of the Order of Canada
Without a doubt, Serge Godin is one of our great information technology entrepreneurs. In 1976, he founded CGI, which became, under his guiding hand, not only one of the largest independent consulting and informatics management firms in North America, but also a good corporate citizen. Aware of the responsibilities that go along with success, he has established and financed the Fondation Jeunesse-Vie to help troubled youth and has participated in numerous fundraising campaigns in the health and education sectors.
Claude Gosselin, C.M.Montreal, QuebecMember of the Order of Canada
Claude Gosselin has long been devoted to promoting contemporary art by Canadian and international artists. His unique contribution as an administrator is exemplified by the tools he createdunparalleled in Canadato promote modern art. He launched "Les Cent Jours d'art contemporain de Montréal", the "Biennale de Montréal" and the Centre international d'art contemporain, of which he is executive and artistic director. He has also held strategic positions with the Canada Council for the Arts and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, in addition to being sought out for his expertise at international conferences. Through his commitment to cultural organizations, including the Société des musées québécois and O Vertigo Danse, he is a key figure in promoting our culture.
Linda Haynes, C.M.Toronto, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Linda Haynes has used her talents as a businesswoman to support charities in Canada and abroad. She is the co-founder of ACE Bakery Limited, a successful enterprise known for donating a percentage of its food products and profits to charitable organizations, as well as for funding culinary scholarships and organic farming initiatives. As co-founder of Calmeadow and the Haynes-Connell Foundation, she has been involved nationally and internationally in sponsoring initiatives that champion freedom of speech, promote intercultural understanding and provide financial services to low-income self-employed people in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa. Her generosity to the less fortunate is a model for all Canadians.
James Deverell Horsman, C.M., A.O.E.Medicine Hat, AlbertaMember of the Order of Canada
James Horsman's service to the community has been sustained and wide-reaching. A dynamic politician and volunteer, he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1975. Over the course of the next two decades, he steadfastly represented his constituents' interests. After leaving public office, he has remained an important presence in the community. Dedicated to building a strong public education system, he is a staunch supporter of Medicine Hat College, where he served as chair of their board of governors. As chancellor of the University of Lethbridge, he made great strides in fostering harmonious partnerships between students, faculty and the community.
Major-General (Ret) Lewis W. MacKenzie, C.M., O.Ont., M.S.C., C.D.Carp, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Lewis MacKenzie is renowned for his professionalism, leadership and dedication to the men and women of the Canadian Forces. He is equally applauded for his humanitarian and voluntary work in Canada and abroad. For more than three decades, he served in various command positions and in many peacekeeping missions. A supporter of charitable causes, he has been active within organizations such as the Canadian Special Olympics, the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research and Parkinson Society Canada. Moreover, his work as patron of ICROSS Canada (International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering) has won praise both nationally and internationally. He
is also known as a writer, lecturer and commentator on United Nations peacekeeping and security matters. His service to others is an inspiration to us all.
Lalita Malhotra, C.M., S.O.M.Prince Albert, SaskatchewanMember of the Order of Canada
Lalita Malhotra is an obstetrician and family physician who treats her patients with both passion and compassion. Since settling in Prince Albert 30 years ago, she has delivered thousands of babies, helped to found a wellness clinic for women and advocated for skills-upgrading opportunities. Her involvement in the community is not restricted to her medical practice. She counsels teenagers at the Ranch Ehrlo Society treatment centre, volunteers with the YWCA's Family Futures Program and has raised funds for disaster relief in South East Asia. Affectionately referred to as the "Angel of the North", she is known as a great humanitarian.
Roy A. Miki, C.M.Vancouver, British ColumbiaMember of the Order of Canada
Roy Miki, a professor of English at Simon Fraser University, is an award-winning poet and an influential scholar and editor. For many years, he was at the forefront of the struggle to obtain redress for Japanese Canadians interned during the Second World War. He helped begin a dialogue within his community and then took on important roles within the Japanese Canadian Centennial Project and the National Association of Japanese Canadians. In 2004, he published Redress: Inside the Japanese Canadian Call for Justice, a work that speaks directly about his personal experiences and that has created great awareness among Canadians about this chapter of our history.
Walter Ostrom, C.M.Indian Harbour, Nova ScotiaMember of the Order of Canada
Walter Ostrom is a ceramic artist who has been an influential figure in his field for more than 35 years. An expert in low-fired tin-glazed earthenware, he has revived and modernized this ceramic art form in Canada and abroad. His unique, innovative and visually striking art has been featured in collections and exhibitions worldwide, including the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Victoria and Albert Museum in England. Renowned for his generosity and nurturing spirit as a professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, he has been a beloved teacher and mentor to generations of emerging artists.
John (Jack) Pelech, C.M.Hamilton, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Jack Pelech is a lawyer who believes that participating in sport builds character, community and national pride. As volunteer chair of the Canada Games Council for 30 years, he was a key figure in the creation and expansion of the Canada Games, an important and unique element in the development of our amateur athletes. He also shared his experience, skills and networks with the City of Hamilton when it hosted world championships in two different sporting events. In addition, with his involvement in ParticipACTION and the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport, he has promoted greater physical activity amongst all Canadians.
John A. Rae, C.M.Montreal, QuebecMember of the Order of Canada
John Rae, the executive vice-president of Power Corporation of Canada, is highly respected for his visionary leadership. During the course of his 35-year career, he has served on several boards and committees. Notably, he has been a member of the board of trustees of Queen's University since 1994 and is currently completing a five-year mandate as chair. During his tenure, he has co-chaired the Cabinet committee responsible for the highly successful Campaign for Queen's. Known for forging connections between stakeholder groups in the public sector and citizens in the broader community, he holds the chairmanship of the McGill University Health Centre's Best Care for Life capital campaign.
Fiona Reid, C.M.Toronto, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Fiona Reid is a talented actress known for her unwavering commitment to the arts and to the community. She is particularly recognized for her performances at the Stratford and Shaw festivals, the Canadian Stage Company and in "The King of Kensington" television series. Very active within the artistic community, she has lent her many abilities to organizations such as Performers for Literacy, ShakespeareWorks in the Schools and Dancers in Transition. She is also involved in championing the importance of arts in Canada. Moreover, her involvement with Amnesty International, the Canadian Landmine Foundation and the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture reveals her profound compassion and dedication to bringing solace to people within and beyond our borders.
David P. Silcox, C.M.Toronto, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
David Silcox is driven by the belief that artists play a critical role in defining Canadian culture. President of Sotheby's Canada, he has turned the auction house into a major force in the national art market. As a senior administrator in provincial and federal governments, he established cultural policies and programs such as the Art Bank at the Canada Council for the Arts, which brought improved opportunities, support and recognition to our artists. Moreover, he has received accolades for the biography that he wrote and the catalogue raisonné that he co-authored on painter David Milne. Through these works and his other books on prominent Canadian painters, he has made an important and lasting contribution to the study of Canadian art.
Harvey V. Thommasen, C.M., O.B.C.Masset, British ColumbiaMember of the Order of Canada
Harvey Thommasen is a family physician and researcher known for his exemplary work in exposing the challenges of Canadian rural medicine. Working closely with First Nations communities, he has addressed issues ranging from diabetes, obesity and depression to residential school syndrome and bear maulings. He has served as professor and chair of the University of Northern British Columbia's Department of Community Health and participated in the creation of the institution's new Northern Medical Program. His writings as well as his contributions to many nature publications express yet another level of his passion and dedication to his region's distinctive lifestyle and beautiful environment.
Denise Verreault, C.M., C.Q.Les Méchins, QuebecMember of the Order of Canada
Denise Verreault has distinguished herself by her efforts to promote the economic and social development of her region. At just 24 years of age, she succeeded her father and became president of Groupe Maritime Verreault inc., a company specialized in the construction, conversion and repair of ships. Under her leadership, the company achieved impressive growth and international renown. In addition, a number of organizations, including la Corporation de soutien au développement technologique des PME, and the Canadian committee of a German ship classification company, benefit from her expertise. This proud Gaspesian and advocate for the role of regions also encourages women to enter non-traditional fields of work and is a role model for the young generation.
Stanley H. Zlotkin, C.M.Toronto, OntarioMember of the Order of Canada
Stanley Zlotkin is a respected leader in the medical community. In addition to his work as professor of paediatrics at the University of Toronto, he is also a nutrition specialist and researcher at the Hospital for Sick Children. He has conceived an innovative and easy-to-use supplement to address iron deficiency in children. He has also been an advisor and consultant for UNICEF, the International Development Research Centre and the International Life Sciences Institute. His research and his ability to transfer his knowledge to practical applications have brought hope to caregivers and families around the world.

Charles Baillie began his career with the Toronto-Dominion Bank in 1964 and retired as CEO in 2002 and as chairman in 2003. In addition to his regular responsibilities, he guided the sponsorship activities of this financial institution in communities throughout Canada. He is also recognized as an inspirational philanthropist who has advanced the arts, education, protection of the environment and the welfare of those less fortunate. Notably, he has generously supported the Soulpepper Theatre Company and the Art Gallery of Ontario and has been the driving force behind the fundraising efforts of various organizations such as the Shaw Festival, the Orillia Museum of Art and History, and Nature Conservancy Canada. Now chancellor at Queen's University, he champions the institution at the provincial and national levels and continues to demonstrate an outstanding dedication to his community and his country.
H. Douglas Barber, O.C.Dundas, OntarioOfficer of the Order of Canada
Douglas Barber has been a dynamic force within the Canadian microelectronics industry for the past 30 years. An engineer and entrepreneur, he is co-founder and former CEO of Gennum Corporation, a leader in the design and manufacture of integrated circuits. He has been a catalyst for the development of many initiatives in the field, such as the Canadian Semiconductor Design Association and the Canadian Semiconductor Technology Conference. As distinguished professor in residence at McMaster University, he continued to mobilize stakeholders from the academic, private and public sectors to ensure Canada's global competitiveness in high technology.
Reginald W. Bibby, O.C.Lethbridge, AlbertaOfficer of the Order of Canada
Reginald Bibby is recognized as a leading scholar in the field of sociology in Canada and internationally. A professor at the University of Lethbridge, he has asked challenging questions about our culture and, through a series of national surveys, has provided informative and revealing answers. He is also a founding director of the Alberta Centre for Child, Family and Community Research. His reports, articles and bestselling books have become invaluable references, particularly on the topic of religion in our contemporary society. By monitoring our social trends, values and attitudes for over three decades, he has enhanced our understanding of Canadian identity.
Edward Burtynsky, O.C.Toronto, OntarioOfficer of the Order of Canada
Edward Burtynsky is a unique and important artist of our times. A talented and internationally recognized photographer, he has trained his lens on such subjects as open mine sites, quarries, scrapyards and oil refineries. His images are arresting and thought-provoking, demonstrating his ability to find aesthetic beauty in the unlikeliest of places. He has also been a strong supporter of his local photographic community and founded Toronto Image Works to provide studios, exhibition space and educational workshops. In documenting the impact of industrial development on the environment, he is making an important contribution to the global dialogue on sustainability.

George Butterfield is a remarkable corporate leader and philanthropist. In addition to the various business initiatives that he has led, he co-founded Butterfield & Robinson, one of the world's premier biking and walking travel companies, which has earned an outstanding reputation in Canada and around the world, particularly in the United States. The tremendous success of this venture has enabled him to give back to his community by being an active and generous supporter of national and international organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, PEN Canada and World Literacy of Canada. Moreover, with commitment and enthusiasm, he has led numerous campaigns, notably for the Ontario College of Art and Design. Not only is he a talented entrepreneur but he is also a person who genuinely cares about the welfare of others.
William (Bill) Comrie, O.C.Edmonton, AlbertaOfficer of the Order of Canada
Bill Comrie is known and respected for his entrepreneurial skills and his benevolence. Founder of the Brick Warehouse Corporation, he developed innovative sales strategies and led the company through its transformation into one of Canada's top-ranking furniture retailers. He also transferred his guiding principles of inquisitiveness and tenacity in business to fundraising campaigns for the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Heart Institute. In addition, he sponsored the BC Lions Football Club as well as youth sports initiatives such as Sport Central and the Super Novice Hockey Tournament. A coach at heart, he has inspired both emerging and established entrepreneurs with his passion, creativity and commitment.
Janet M. Davidson, O.C.Vancouver, British ColumbiaOfficer of the Order of Canada
Janet Davidson has travelled the world, offering humanitarian relief to people living in countries ravaged by war, famine or natural disaster. This quintessential volunteer serves with grace and compassion as vice-president of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Here at home, during her tenure as national president, she deftly guided the Canadian Red Cross through a period of transformation, refocusing its mandate. Overseeing the operations of the Vancouver General and University of British Columbia hospitals as well as the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre, she is one of Canada's most senior front-line health care administrators.
David Dolphin, O.C.Vancouver, British ColumbiaOfficer of the Order of Canada
David Dolphin, a professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of British Columbia, has conducted groundbreaking research that has resulted in pharmaceutical innovations. Chief among them is Visudyne, a treatment for a type of age-related macular degeneration that can lead to blindness. As an executive with Quadra Logic Technology, he has played a key role in the commercialization of this discovery. He has also contributed to the wider scientific community through his leadership of Genome British Columbia and the BC Innovation Council. Throughout his career, he has championed the transfer of technology and intellectual property from the university laboratory to the marketplace.
B. Brett Finlay, O.C.Richmond, British ColumbiaOfficer of the Order of Canada
Brett Finlay is one of our most eminent researchers in cellular microbiology. He holds the Peter Wall Distinguished Professorship at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and he is a professor with the Michael Smith Laboratories, UBC's interdisciplinary biotechnology unit. Highly respected for his body of work on the E. coli and salmonella bacteria as well as the SARS virus, he has succeeded in developing practical solutions and productive partnerships to respond to public health threats. His innovative research, paired with his remarkable analytical and communication skills, has played a significant role in shaping Canada's evolving health policy.
Norman Horrocks, O.C.Dartmouth, Nova ScotiaOfficer of the Order of Canada
Norman Horrocks has made outstanding contributions to library science nationally and internationally. Julius Isaac is a respected jurist and an esteemed role model within the African-Canadian community. He was appointed principal legal adviser to the Attorney General of Canada before becoming a judge of the Supreme Court of Ontario and chief justice of the Federal Court of Canada. In 2001, he was also appointed chairman of the West Kingston Commission of Inquiry in Jamaica. As a student, he actively advocated for the liberalization of immigration laws. Former president of the Grenada Association of Toronto, he co-chaired the Endowment Committee for Dalhousie University's Chair for Black Canadian Studies. In recognition of his lasting influence, the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers established in 2003 a scholarship in his name at the University of Windsor to assist black students who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in education and to the community.

David Naylor is one of our nation's leading medical researchers and policy advisors. As the director of Clinical Epidemiology at Sunnybrook Hospital Medical Centre and as founding CEO of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, he conducted research that improved the effectiveness and efficiency of health care services. His pioneering work on the management of waiting lists for cardiovascular care was instrumental in the creation of the Cardiac Network of Ontario. In addition, he has been called upon to serve on the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health. Former dean of Medicine and now president of the University of Toronto, he continues to provide leadership in health care and education.

Greg Powell, an educator and physician, has improved emergency health services for critically ill or injured Canadians. His belief that seconds count in a medical emergency became the impetus for the 1985 launch of an air ambulance service, now known as the Alberta Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society (STARS). Since its inception, STARS, with its fleet of state-of-the-art aircraft, has become a vital link in the "chain of survival" and serves as a model for similar services around the world. A tireless fundraiser, he has recruited hundreds of volunteers and highly qualified medical and aviation crews who have flown more than 13,000 life-saving missions.

Denis Stairs is one of Canada's most respected authorities in political science and international affairs. Professor emeritus at Dalhousie University and founding director of the school's Centre for Foreign Policy Studies, he has always worked to improve the quality of education through his scholarship and mentorship. He is widely sought-after for his expertise, and his views have helped to shape Canadian public policy, particularly in the areas of defence and Canadian-American relations. He has published influential works, including The Diplomacy of Constraint: Canada, the Korean War, and the United States, one of the best texts in its field.
