OTTAWA, February 20, 2007 The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Sélection du Pâtissier Inc. are warning the public not to consume Cranberry crème brûlée slab Sélection du Pâtissier because this product may be contaminated with Staphylococcus toxin.
All lot codes of the following product are affected by this alert :
Sélection du Pâtissier, frozen Cranberry crème brûlée slab, sold in a 7.4 kg/16.31 lbs case that contains 2 x 42 pre-marked servings slabs, bearing item number 00208 and UPC 1 06 22267 00208 4.
The individual slab is identified as a 3.7 kg/8.15 lbs package bearing item number 00208 and UPC 6 22267 00208 7.
This product is known to have been distributed in Quebec but may have been distributed nationally.
There have been more than one hundred and ninety reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with Staphylococcus toxin may not look or smell spoiled. The toxin produced by Staphylococcus bacteria is not easily destroyed at normal cooking temperatures. Common symptoms of Staphylococcus poisoning are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and fever. In severe cases, headache, muscle cramping and changes in blood pressure and pulse rate may occur.
The manufacturer, Sélection du Pâtissier Inc., Portneuf, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
