March 6, 2007
No. 35
The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade, will lead a trade
mission to India from March 12 to 16, 2007, with stops in New Delhi, Hyderabad, and
Mumbai. India is an important trading partner for this country, and Canada's new
government is committed to strengthening our relationship with India by increasing
export and investment opportunities for Canadian companies. This trip is part of a
comprehensive strategy to bolster overall trade and competitiveness, with special
attention to key markets such as India.
"Canada sees tremendous opportunities for a closer commercial relationship with
India," said Minister Emerson. "This trip will lay the groundwork for more cooperation
and collaboration, both at the government and business levels."
Minister Emerson will be accompanied by a business delegation of leaders from the
infrastructure sector. His trip will also intersect with a second high-level commercial
delegation consisting of members of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (CCCE).
He will participate in a Canada-India CEO round table with members of the CCCE and
Kamal Nath, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry.
In addition to meeting with Minister Nath, Minister Emerson will also meet with other
Indian ministers.
Minister Emerson will also participate in "Saving Doha and Delivering on Development,"
a World Trade Organization (WTO) seminar being hosted by the Government of India,
together with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development and
non-governmental organizations. This will provide the Minister with the opportunity to
discuss Canada's position in the WTO negotiations, with a focus on the development
objectives of the Doha Round.
Ted Menzies, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade and
Minister of International Cooperation, and Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Foreign Affairs, will also join the Minister in India to meet with Canadian
and Indian business leaders.
