OTTAWA -- The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the reappointment of Mr. Walter Paszkowski
and the appointment of Mr. Stuart D. B. Smith to the board of
directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
"The expertise of Mr. Paszkowski and Mr. Smith in law, management and business
is sure to be an asset to the board," said Minister Cannon. "I'm very pleased
that they have agreed to take on these important duties."
Mr. Paszkowski graduated from Fairview Agriculture College in Alberta. He is
currently owner and operator of a seed farm and retail seed outlet. Mr. Paszkowski
was regional office manager for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for
12 years and a sales supervisor for Northern Alberta Rapeseed Processors
Cooperative for almost two years. He is also founding director of the Northern
Alberta Rapeseed Crushing Plant, founder and chair of the Grow with Canola
Committee and member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association. Mr. Paszkowski
has been reappointed to the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port
Authority as users' representative for a period of three years.
Mr. Smith holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Victoria and a
bachelor of laws from the University of British Columbia. He was appointed to
the Queen's Council in 1988 and has been a member of the Law Society of British
Columbia for over 30 years. Mr. Smith is currently president of Mejia Property
Inc., general counsel and corporate secretary for Urban Systems Ltd., a director
of the Christopher James Gold Corporation and president of YKA Travelwise
Kamloops Ltd., Nicola Mortgage Corporation, and Pacific Crest Homes Ltd. He has
served as a Crown corporation director for both Canada and the Province of
British Columbia. Mr. Smith has been appointed to the board of directors of the
Prince Rupert Port Authority as federal representative for a period of three
years.
The Prince Rupert Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established
to manage the Port of Prince Rupert, effective May 1, 1999, under the Canada
Marine Act. As a CPA, the Prince Rupert Port Authority benefits from greater
management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and
borrow money from commercial lenders.
The Port of Prince Rupert is the second largest deep-sea port on Canada's West
Coast and the deepest natural harbour in North America. With dedicated grain,
coal, forest products, specialty grain and general cargo handling facilities,
the port handles more than 7.7 million tonnes of cargo traffic annually. The
port also has dedicated cruise passenger handling facilities.
