The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has concluded its analysis of potentially
contaminated feed involving cattle farms in Ontario and Quebec.
CFIA investigators determined that approximately 8,400 animals from the two provinces
were not exposed to potentially harmful feed. Exposure could not be ruled out for
approximately 1,700 animals from 26 farms in Quebec. The animals in the latter group, and
their meat products and by-products, will not be eligible for export. This measure is in
place to meet the technical requirements of certain trading partners but in no other way
affects their saleability in Canada.
The 1,700 cattle will be approved for movement, milk production and slaughter in Canada
once the specific tracking requirements are met. All movement will be tracked and reported
using the official identification tags to ensure that the animals or their meat products
are not exported.
The CFIA has determined that there is no food safety concern associated with any of the
exposed animals. Canada requires the removal of all tissues, or specified risk materials
(SRM), known to harbour BSE infectivity from every animal slaughtered for human
consumption. Furthermore, in the context of BSE, Canadian and international health experts
agree that milk and milk products are safe. Consequently, these animals can enter
slaughter streams and continue to be used for milk production.
