Illegal Importation of Fish Results in Company Fine

The failure to provide notification to an inspector for the importation of
fish into Canada resulted in a North Vancouver company receiving a $3,500 fine.
On June 14, 2007, Falesca Importing Ltd. entered a guilty plea at the Provincial
Court in North Vancouver, B.C., to one count of violating section 6(2)(e) of the
Fish Inspection Regulations, resulting in the fine.
The offence occurred between February 21, 2005 and May 22, 2005.
Section 6(2)(e) states:
No person shall import into Canada or attempt to import into Canada any fish
unless written notification of each shipment of fish to be imported or that is
imported is provided to an inspector either prior to the importation or within
48 hours following the importation.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation
including the Fish Inspection Act and its regulations. The CFIA's
jurisdiction is limited to the enforcement of these Acts and their Regulations.
It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants
and the health of animals in Canada.
