On May 16, 2007, Macartney Farms, located in Ottawa, entered a guilty plea and was
convicted on two counts of violating the Meat Inspection Act.
The offences, which took place on March 17, 2006, involved applying or using the
regulatory legend without authorization, in contravention of section 5(a) of the Meat
Inspection Act, and sending or conveying a meat product from one province to another
when that product had not been prepared or stored in a registered establishment, in
contravention of section 8(a) of the Meat Inspection Act, RSC (1985), ch 25 (1st
supp).
Mr. Justice Benoît, of the Court of Quebec, sentenced the
company to a fine of $6,000, payable within 90 days, and ordered the confiscation and
destruction of the meat products seized. The judgment was rendered at the Hull courthouse
on May 16, 2007.
