The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency), the Nunavut Impact Review Board (the Board), and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) have established a $100,000 participant funding program. This fund is to assist groups and/or individuals to take part in the environmental assessment of the proposed High Lake Mine Project.
To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the environmental assessment of the proposed project. Funding applications that have already been submitted to the Board will be forwarded to the Manager of the Participant Funding Program. Funding applications received by August 10, 2007 will be considered.
A Participant Funding Review Committee will review funding applications and recommend to the President of the Agency the distribution of available funds to successful applicants. Preference will be given to those applicants that have a direct, local interest in the project.
Wolfden Resources Inc. is proposing to construct, operate, modify, abandon and decommission a copper, zinc, gold and silver mine and associated infrastructure in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. The High Lake Mine Project will be serviced by a 49 km temporary winter road and a 53 km all-season road, which will connect to a dock facility on Grays Bay in the Coronation Gulf. The dock will be used to load ore concentrate and receive equipment, fuel, and supplies. The current 1 450-meter airstrip at Sand Lake will be upgraded to 2 000 meter length to provide air support for worker rotation.
The project is subject to a review pursuant to Article 12 Part 5 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. As certain components of the project are also described in the comprehensive study list under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (the Act), the federal departments, the Agency and the Board are working together to ensure a single environmental assessment will be conducted. This assessment will be led by the Board with the full cooperation of INAC, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Transport Canada and the Agency. The parties are committed to coordinating the environmental assessment process in order to avoid duplication while allowing parties to meet their respective obligations.
The Participant Funding Program Guide and the application form are available on the Agency’s Web site. Information on the proposed project is available on the Board’s ftp site.
