Interforest Ltd. Fined $20,000 for an Offence Under the Plant Protection Act

On July 10, 2007 Interforest Ltd. pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound to one count of violating subsection 9(1), thereby committing an offense under subsection 48(2) of the Plant Protection Act, resulting in a fine of $20,000.
CFIA inspectors conducted an inspection on January 21, 2005 at Interforest Ltd., to verify compliance with the import conditions set out in the import permits issued to them. One ash log, (genus fraxinus) was found to be imported without meeting the prescribed conditions specified in the Plant Protection Import Permit.
The Plant Protection Act protects plant life and the agricultural and forestry sectors of the Canadian economy by preventing the importation, exportation and spread of pests and by controlling or eradicating pests in Canada.
