Senator charged for mishandling public funds, abuse of authority

Ottawa — August 14, 2007 — Earlier today, the Ottawa RCMP Commercial Crime Section laid charges under the Criminal Code of Canada against Senator Raymond Lavigne for Fraud over $5,000, Section 380 (1) (a); Breach of Trust, Section 122; and Obstruction of Justice, Section 139 (2).

The charges were in connection with Lavigne’s alleged use of Senate resources for personal gain.
The RCMP launched the investigation in August 2006 after the matter was referred to them by the Senate. The investigation probed the Senator’s activities between 2002 to 2005. Senator Lavigne is alleged to have misappropriated Senate funds over $5,000. He is also alleged to have directed one of his employees to carry out tasks unrelated to Senate duties.

Senator Lavigne is scheduled to appear in court on September 18, 2007.
