Manufacturer Fined for use of an Unregistered Recipe & Labels

News Release

On September 11, 2007, Lawrence Meat Packing Co. Ltd. entered a guilty plea in Dawson Creek Provincial Court to one count of violating the Meat Inspection Regulations.
This company was fined $1000.00 for using a recipe and label for a prepared meat product that had not been submitted to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for registration, contrary to s. 110.(1) of the Meat Inspection Regulations.
In June 2004, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) saw bison burgers for sale at the retail store of Lawrence Meat Packing Co. Ltd. in Dawson Creek, B.C. During inquiries, the CFIA learned that Lawrence Meat Packing Co. Ltd. had processed these burgers, but did not submit its recipe and labels for registration by the CFIA.
Section 110.(1) of the Meat Inspection Regulations states:
No label or recipe that is to be used for a prepared meat product intended for sale in Canada shall be used in a registered establishment or used for an imported meat product unless
(a) the label and the recipe for the meat product have been submitted to the Director for registration, together with the applicable fee set out in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Fees Notice; or
(b) the person who submitted the label and the recipe for registration has been notified pursuant to subsection (3) that the label and recipe have been registered.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation including the Meat Inspection Regulations. The CFIA’s jurisdiction is limited to the enforcement of these Regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
