Statement by the Honourable Rob Nicholson Issued Following the Death of the Right Honourable Antonio Lamer

OTTAWA , November 25, 2007 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson issued the following statement for the death of the Right Honourable Antonio Lamer:
The Right Honourable Mr. Lamer lived his entire adult life in the law. By his early thirties he was recognized as one of the leading criminal counsel in Quebec. Named to the Superior Court of Quebec in 1969 at the young age of 36, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal of Quebec in 1978 and to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1980. He concurrently served on the Law Reform Commission of Canada, becoming its Chairman in 1976. He was named Chief Justice of Canada in 1990.
Chief Justice Lamer led the Supreme Court of Canada for ten years, until 2000.
The Right Honourable Mr. Lamer continued his public service after leaving the Court. He led Royal Commissions of Inquiry, notably into the administration of justice in Newfoundland. As well, he assisted the Government of Canada by providing oversight as Commissioner to the Communications Security Establishment.
The Minister joins the Department of Justice in extending condolences to the Hon Danièle Tremblay-Lamer and the family of the Right Honourable Mr. Lamer.
