OTTAWA , December 14, 2007 -- The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable George R. Strathy , a lawyer with Strathy & Isaacs Barristers & Solicitors in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the province of Ontario. He replaces Mr. Justice E.F. Then ( Toronto) who was appointed Regional Senior Judge for the Toronto Region.
Mr. Justice Strathy r eceived a Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1974 from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 1970. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1976. Mr. Justice Strathy, a former Partner of the firm Fasken Campbell Godfrey is a present Partner of Strathy & Isaacs Barristers & Solicitors. Mr. Justice Strathy has developed an expertise in maritime and transportation law, civil litigation, insurance and environmental law. Mr. Justice Strathy has also appeared as a speaker and/or seminar presenter at innumerable conferences.
The Honourable Alfred J. O’Marra , a lawyer with the Ministry of Attorney General, Director of Crown Operations in Toronto, is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. He replaces Mr. Justice J. D. Watt ( Toronto) who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.
Mr. Justice O’Marra r eceived a Master of Laws in 2003 from York University, Osgoode Hall Law School, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law in 1981, and a Bachelor of Arts with the faculty of Social Sciences, Political Science from the University of Western Ontario in 1974. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1983. Mr. Justice O’Marra is currently Deputy Crown Attorney, with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, in Toronto. Mr. Justice O’Marra has developed an expertise in Criminal and Administrative Law. He has appeared as a Director/speaker for the Crown Attorneys Association, and the Coroners’ Inquest Counsel Course on an annual basis since 1999. Mr. Justice O’Marra was Chair of the Domestic Violence Death Review Committee and has written numerous publications.
The Honourable Gordon D. Lemon , a lawyer with Innes, Lemon Barristers in Woodstock , is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the Province of Ontario. He
replaces Mr. Justice J.R. Belleghem ( Brampton) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Lemon r eceived a Bachelor of Laws in 1981 from the Osgoode Hall Law School, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto in 1978. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1983. Mr. Justice Lemon, a former counsel with Barenberg, McDonald is a present Partner with Innes, Lemon Barristers . Mr. Justice Lemon has developed an expertise in family, criminal and civil litigation, and mediation. Mr. Justice Lemon is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Criminal Lawyer’s Association, ADR Institute of Canada, and the Advocates Society.
The Honourable Darla A. Wilson , a lawyer with Lawson McGrenere LLP in Toronto , is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the province of Ontario. She replaces the late Mr. Justice A.G. Campbell ( Toronto).
Madam Justice Wilson received a Bachelor of Laws from Queen’s University in 1984, and a Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University 1981. She was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1986. Madam Justice Wilson, a former member of Borden Ladner Gervais is a present Partner with Lawson McGrenere LLP. Madam Justice Wilson has developed an expertise in civil litigation, medical malpractice; defence of hospitals and other health care facilities on negligence claims; general insurance defence work including occupier’s liability, motor vehicle and municipal negligence. Madam Justice Wilson is a member of the Board of Directors for Medico-Legal Society.
The Honourable R. Cary Boswell , a lawyer with Craig Boswell McDermot in Barrie , is appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in and for the province of Ontario. He replaces Mr. Justice G.P. DiTomaso ( Newmarket) who is to be transferred to Barrie to replace Mr. Justice P.H. Howden, who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Boswell received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto in 1988, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo in 1985. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1990. Mr. Justice Boswell a former associate lawyer with Mark Scharf, Barrister & Solicitor is a present partner with Craig Boswell McDermot. Mr. Justice Boswell has developed an expertise in civil litigation, family law, bankruptcy and insolvency, estate litigation, and real property litigation. Mr. Justice Boswell is a Member of Simcoe County Law Association, Canadian Bar Association, and a Lecturer at Georgian College, in Barrie.
These appointments are effective immediately.
