$500 Fine for Designation Violation

GRAND BANK, NL - Ms. Connie Legge of Garnish was fined $500 on December 5,
2007 in Grand Bank Provincial Court for being employed in the fishery while having
a designation in place. Ms. Legge was fishing contrary to a condition of her commercial
lobster licence.
On June 1, 2007 fishery officers from the Marystown Detachment, on patrol in
Placentia Bay, boarded and inspected the fishing vessel ‘Paula and Connie III'.
The inspection determined Ms. Legge was a crewmember engaged in the crab fishery.
At the time, Ms. Legge had a designation in place for another fish harvester to
fish her lobster licence from June 1 4, 2007. As a result, she breached a condition
of her licence by working on another vessel while a designation was in place for
her own enterprise.
As a condition of licence, individuals who receive designations must not be employed
outside the fishery or involved in the fishery during the designation period either
on their own or on any other fishing enterprise.
