Minister Emerson to Visit China, Mongolia and Hong Kong

The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the
Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, will travel to China, Mongolia
and Hong Kong from January 7 to 11 to pursue trade and investment opportunities. He
will be accompanied by James Moore, Parliamentary Secretary for the Pacific Gateway
and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics.
“Canada and China are accelerating bilateral trade through two-way investment,
science and technology partnerships, and the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor
Initiative,” said Minister Emerson. “This visit will allow us to strengthen existing areas of
cooperation and explore new ways to drive our relationship forward.”
In Beijing, Minister Emerson will be hosted by Commerce Minister Chen Deming and
meet with other key ministers. He will also deliver a keynote address to the
Canada-China Business Council’s Annual General Meeting banquet on January 10.
Minister Emerson and Mr. Moore will be accompanied by a Canadian air services trade
mission focused on expanding two-way cargo and passenger services. They will also
discuss Chinese and Canadian preparations to host the Olympic and Paralympic
games in Beijing in 2008 and Vancouver in 2010.
Minister Emerson’s visit to Mongolia is the first by a senior Canadian minister in a
decade. While in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, he will meet President Nambaryn
Enkhbayar, Prime Minister Sanj Bayar and various senior ministers to promote
Canada’s trade and investment interests. Canada is one of the largest investors in
Mongolia. The visit reflects Canada’s growing importance as a partner to the
mineral-rich country.
In Hong Kong, the Minister will meet with Secretary for Commerce and Economic
Development Frederick Ma and Secretary for Transport and Housing Eva Cheng.
Two-way trade in merchandise goods between Canada and China reached a record
$42 billion in 2006, up 15 percent over the previous year. Two-way investment is an
estimated $2.9 billion.
Two-way trade in merchandise goods between Canada and Hong Kong reached $2.1
billion in 2006, up 5.8 percent over the previous year. Two-way investment is an
estimated $10 billion.
