OTTAWA , February 1, 2008 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable Paul J. Pearlman, Q.C ., a lawyer with Fuller, Pearlman, McNeil in Victoria British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Mr. Justice Pearlman is replacing Mr. Justice S.D. Frankel (Vancouver) who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.
Mr. Justice Pearlman received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1975, a Bachelor of Laws from Cambridge in 1973, and a Bachelor in History from the University of Victoria in 1971. He was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 1977. Mr. Justice Pearlman is presently a Partner with Fuller, Pearlman, McNeil. He was employed with the Constitutional and Administrative Law Section, at the British Columbia Ministry of the Attorney General from 1991 to 1992 and an associate and Partner with Pearlman and Lindholm from 1979 to 1990. He has developed a practice expertise in commercial arbitration and administrative, labour, aboriginal and employment law. In addition, Mr. Justice Pearlman is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
The Honourable Lauri Ann Fenlon , a lawyer with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin in Vancouver, British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Madam Justice Fenlon is replacing Madam Justice N.E. Morrison ( Vancouver) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Madam Justice Fenlon received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria in 1983, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 1979 from Queen's University. She was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 1985. Madam Justice Fenlon has been an associate counsel with Fasken Martineau Dumoulin since 1997. She was an associate with Russell and DuMoulin from 1985 to 1992, and a partner from 1992 to 1997. Madam Justice Fenlon has developed a practice expertise in civil litigation, family law, administrative, commercial law, privacy law, and health law. In addition, she has been an instructor at the University of British Columbia Law School Advocacy Course from 2002-2006 and Vice Chair of the Vancouver College Board of Directors since 2003.
The Honourable Geoffrey R. J. Gaul , a lawyer with the Ministry of Attorney General, Criminal Justice Branch Headquarters in Victoria, British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Mr. Justice Gaul is replacing Mr. Justice I.B. Josephson ( New Westminster) who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Gaul received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor in 1988 and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 1985 from Queen's University. He was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 1989. Since 2003, Mr. Justice Gaul has been a Director at Legal Services with the Ministry of Attorney General, Criminal Justice Branch in Victoria, and from 1998 to 2003 he was Crown Counsel/Communications Counsel with the Ministry of Attorney General. In 2000, Mr. Justice Gaul joined the Canadian Forces, Reserves, Office of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) and was commissioned as a Lieutenant (Navy), in 2004 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-commander. He developed a practice expertise in criminal law, environmental law, and first nations/aboriginal law. In addition, he has been member of the BC Crown Counsel's "Bilingual Prosecution Group" since 1990 and responsible for the recruitment, management and training of its members since 1997.
These appointments are effective immediately.
