OTTAWA - The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced new measures to improve the safety of parachuting activities in Canada.
Proposed amendments to the Canadian Aviation Regulations would ensure that individuals and organizations comply with the safety standards of national parachute organizations. These standards include the training of student parachutists and instructor certification.
"The Government of Canada has worked with stakeholders to clarify the regulations and provide enforceable standards," said Minister Cannon. "These changes will help ensure that individuals and organizations are accountable for parachuting safety."
The proposed amendments provide a regulatory and safety framework for organizations providing parachute training, by making previously voluntary standards, procedures and technical recommendations developed and maintained by the parachute community, mandatory.
The proposed amendments were published in the Canada Gazette, Part I on March 15, 2008. A 60-day response period follows, during which time interested parties may comment on the amendments. After careful consideration of all comments received, Transport Canada will finalize the regulations and publish them in the Canada Gazette, Part II.
