The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced the appointment of Pierre Trépanier as a Canadian Commissioner of the International Joint Commission (IJC).
"Mr. Trépanier is a distinguished lawyer with extensive experience at the federal and provincial levels as well as with international corporations," said Minister Bernier. "He is recognized for his skills in building consensus among different stakeholder groups. I am certain he will be a valuable addition to this long-standing and distinguished institution."
The IJC is an independent, binational Canada-United States organization established by the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909. Its purpose is to help prevent and resolve disputes relating to the use and quality of boundary waters and to advise the two countries on related questions.

Pierre Trépanier is a member of the labour and employment group at the law firm of Heenan Blaikie. He has extensive experience in labour relations as a legal advisor to national and international corporations, particularly in the negotiation of collective agreements. Acknowledged for his expertise, skills and ethics, Mr. Trépanier has spoken at many conferences and participated in numerous seminars on labour relations.
Mr. Trépanier has been chairman of the board of the Magnétotheque, an audio book production centre for the visually impaired, as well as a member of the boards of Berlitz Canada and Berlitz GlobalNet Canada. He currently sits on the advisory board of Care Canada.
