Sarnia, Ontario, April 3, 2008 -- The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that its officers at the Blue Water Bridge border crossing in Point Edward (near Sarnia), Ontario, h have seized 46 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of $5.75 million.
Border services officers intercepted the contraband drugs on March 29, 2008, at approximately 9:30 a.m. during the examination of a passenger vehicle. The offic ers uncovered a total of 46 plastic-wrapped bricks of cocaine in a compartment between the rear seat and the trunk area of the vehicle.
A 42-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman, both of Kitchener, Ontario, have been charged under the Contro lled Drugs and Substances Act with importing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
"This seizure is an excellent example of the outstanding work our officers continue to do in keeping illegal drugs out of our communities, " said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. "That is why our Government is committed to a National Anti-Drug Strategy, and why we are investing $3.3 million, over 2 years, i n the CBSA to enhance its ability to inhibit the cross-border flow of illicit drugs."
