The Honourable David Emerson, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, will travel to Beijing, China, from May 20 to 23, 2008.
Minister Emerson will participate in a round-table discussion with Canadian and Chinese business executives to explore two-way investment opportunities.
As part of Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative, the Minister will host a forum on trade and logistics development to increase container traffic between Canada and China.
Minister Emerson will officially open the British Columbia Canada Pavilion with Gordon Campbell, Premier of British Columbia. This unique marketing and exhibition facility is intended to build new relationships and strengthen partnerships between Canada and China before, during and after the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.
This trip will also provide an opportunity for Minister Emerson to express condolences on behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians on the tragic loss of life caused by the recent earthquake in Sichuan province.
