Vancouver, B.C. June 06, 2008 - On April 24, 2008, Albion Fisheries Ltd. entered a guilty plea at the Provincial Court, in Vancouver, B.C. to one count of violating s6(2.2) of the Fish Inspection Regulations. The company was fined $2000 for the unlawful movement of a shipment of crab meat imported into Canada.
An inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) found that a quantity of crab meat imported by Albion Fisheries Ltd. had been sold between July 13, 2006 and August 3, 2006, prior to its release by a CFIA inspector.
Section 6(2.2) of the Fish Inspection Regulations states:
Subject to subsection (2.3), no person shall move or attempt to move fish that has been imported into Canada from the place indicated in the notification referred to in paragraph (2)(e) unless
- the person is the holder of a quality management program import licence;
- an inspector determines the fish meets the requirements of the Act and these Regulations; or
- the person is notified by an inspector that the fish does not need to be inspected.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Fish Inspection Regulations. It protects consumers by contributing to food safety, the protection of plants and the health of animals in Canada.
