No. H 144/08
For release - June 9, 2008
OTTAWA — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that Air Canada, Air Transat, Skyservice Airlines Inc., Sunwing Airlines Inc., and WestJet Airlines Ltd., have been designated to operate additional air services between Canada and Mexico, in accordance with the recently-expanded bilateral air transport agreement between the two countries. In addition, Cargojet has been designated to operate all-cargo air services between Canada and Mexico.
"I am pleased with these increased services, which will provide more options for Canadians travelling and shipping goods to Mexico," said Minister Cannon. "This increase in scheduled air services represents our government's commitment to maintaining strong air links with our international partners, and is a great example of continued growth in the Canadian airline industry."
Under the provisions of Canada's international air transportation policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for designation to operate scheduled international services.
A backgrounder with specific information about the new airline designation allocations between Canada and Mexico is attached.
