MONTRÉAL, June 11, 2008 - Avant-garde and innovative artists from across Canada and elsewhere will liven up Montréal dance floors with their warm rhythms for the enjoyment of festival-goers, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for the Francophonie, today announced funding for this year's Montréal Electronic Groove Festival (MEG Montréal), which takes place from August 1 to August 4.
The $20,000 in funding to will allow the organizers of MEG Montréal to present their 10th festival. This year, the emerging and urban music festival will present dozens of artists of various backgrounds performing in a variety of genres. It will feature more than 15 concerts by artists from Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan, as well as the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Brazil. Awareness (MEG-Showcase) and networking (MEG-Salon) activities will complete the program.
"The financial support provided for this avant-garde cultural event clearly demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to arts and culture," said Minister Verner. "It underlines our willingness to support major events, such as the MEG Montréal, that ensure the vitality and quality of life of Canadian communities. Through this funding, our Government is also contributing to the 2007-2017 Action Plan to make Montréal a cultural metropolis of the 21st century."
Financial assistance was provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians greater access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through festivals, the presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
