STEINBACH, Manitoba - The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Provencher, and Peter Bjornson, Manitoba Minister of Education, Citizenship and Youth, today announced the official launch of the Steinbach Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY). The office is ready to assist businesses and young workers with their summer employment needs.
"The Government of Canada is committed to helping young people get the skills and knowledge they need to improve their employment opportunities," said Minister Toews. "By working with local employers, we can make sure that young people get valuable summer work experience, and that our community has a strong and vibrant work force for the future."
"This is an exciting time of the year, as the offices throughout the province kick off their summer. Manitoba Youth Job Centres and Service Canada Centres for Youth are located in 44 rural, urban, and northern communities throughout Manitoba to assist young people, employers, and the community with their summer employment needs," Minister Bjornson said. "Summer jobs are a great way for students to build a résumé, develop skills, make career contacts, and generate income. We're pleased to partner with our federal colleagues to provide Manitoba students and youth with important opportunities for summer employment and personal development."
SCCYs link young people with employers. The Centres provide young people with access to job postings, interview advice, assistance with résumé writing, and job-search strategies, and they give employers a location to post notices for job openings. SCCYs also provide valuable information on health and safety in the workplace.
"Whatever the job-big or small, short or long term-we can help you fill it," said Kristine Squires, a Youth Services Officer in Steinbach. "In the coming weeks, Youth Services Officers will be contacting local employers to make them aware that our SCCY is now open and ready to assist them in any way it can."
This year, employers interested in using our services and youth looking for summer employment can visit the Steinbach SCCY in person between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, at 321 Main Street.
