OTTAWA (July 22, 2008) – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the reappointment of Violet Doolittle to the Sahtu Land and Water Board.
"Ms. Doolittle has a wealth of experience in Aboriginal issues. She has been particularly dedicated to community matters," said Minister Strahl. "I am pleased to announce that she will continue to provide excellent support to the Sahtu Land and Water Board."
Violet Doolittle is a certified Northern Alcohol and Drug counsellor and has an extensive educational background in Aboriginal issues, including courses in Aboriginal Economic Development, Land Claims and Self Government. She has served as president of the Aboriginal Women Group of Inuvik and has been involved with many other Aboriginal groups throughout the years.
The Sahtu Land and Water Board is responsible for regulating land and water use throughout the Sahtu Settlement Area. The Board issues, amends or renews licences and permits, conducts public hearings and oversees compliance with its decisions, and if necessary, the suspension or cancellation of licences and permits.
The Board consists of five members. Two members are nominated by the Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated, one by the Government of the Northwest Territories and one by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. The Chair will be nominated by a majority of the Board members.
