Trois-Rivières, July 23, 2008 – This morning, members of the RCMP Centre-du-Québec–Mauricie Detachment concluded an investigation launched eight months ago with the arrest of two individuals involved in the purchase and sale of numerous vehicles that had their odometer rolled back. It is estimated that 100 persons were victims of this fraud.
Both individuals, a local man and woman, could be charged with possession of property obtained by crime, making false documents and drawing documents without authority. They will be summoned to appear in court at a later date.
The RCMP wishes to remind the public that there are ways to avoid becoming a victim of odometer tampering. Anyone planning to buy a used car can ensure that the mileage on the odometer is valid by obtaining the vehicle history from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec.
The RCMP also wishes to remind you that if you are a victim of this type of crime you can file a complaint at 819-371-3291. This information will help curb the illegal activities of individuals engaging in such crime.
