Fort Frances, Ontario, August 20, 2008 - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced that NEXUS has expanded to the Fort Frances, Ontario–International Falls, Minnesota border crossing.
"The Government of Canada is proud that NEXUS is expanding at the land border in Fort Frances, Ontario," said Minister Day. "This will enable both Canadian and American NEXUS members to travel quickly and securely between Canada and the United States."
The new enrolment centre, located on the U.S. side of the border, will also make it more convenient for residents of the Fort Frances region to apply to the NEXUS program.
NEXUS is a joint Canada Border Services Agency and U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that is designed to simplify border crossings for pre-approved travellers. On land, NEXUS members can use NEXUS lanes at 16 locations when travelling across the Canada–U.S. border, in cluding a location that was launched on August 18, 2008: Coutts, Alberta–Sweetgrass, Montana. The NEXUS program is also available at eight major Canadian airports and at over 450 locations for the marine mode of transportation.
The NEXUS card is also an accepted alternative document to the passport under the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative when travelling to the United States by air (at designated airports), land and sea. In late fall 2008, NEXUS members will receive a new c ard with enhanced security features, such as holograms, to prevent counterfeiting. To ensure that members receive their card and that their NEXUS privileges continue without interruption, they should visit www.n exus.gc.ca to update or confirm their mailing address.
This NEXUS expansion also demonstrates how the CBSA is preparing to ensure the smooth flow of legitimate travellers across the border in the lead up to the 2010 Winter Olympic s.
