OTTAWA, September 4, 2008 - Canada's Environment Minister, John Baird, announced today that the upgrade of the Amabel-Sauble Water System project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. The Minister has referred the project back to the responsible authority, Industry Canada, for appropriate action.
The Minister based his decision on the comprehensive study report, including the conclusions and recommendations, submitted by Industry Canada; the results of a public comment period and the responsible authority's responses to these comments; and the implementation of the proposed mitigation measures and a follow-up program.
A copy of the Minister's environmental assessment decision statement is available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, reference number 04-03-8130.
The Town of South Bruce Peninsula proposes to upgrade the Amabel-Sauble well system. The purpose of the project is to address the need for additional supply capacity within the community for a 20-year planning period and for the water supply system to comply with the Ontario Drinking Water Systems Regulation. The project is proposed under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
