OTTAWA, October 7, 2008 – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Salaisons Desco Inc. are warning the public not to consume the Dunn's Famous brand Smoked Meat pouches described below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected product, Dunn's Famous brand Smoked Meat, is sold in 1 kg packages containing 6 pouches of 175 g bearing UPC 4 00007 55699 7 and Best Before dates 2008 NO 01 and 2008 NO 02. This product has been distributed only at Costco in Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces and Ottawa.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria my cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The manufacturer, Les Salaisons Desco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is conducting effectiveness checks.
