OTTAWA, October 17, 2008 – Effective immediately, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will require dairy ingredients and soybean meal originating from China intended for use as livestock feed to be tested for melamine and cyanuric acid.
The CFIA has implemented this requirement to protect livestock feed, animal and public health.
Examples of feed ingredients affected by this advisory include:
- Whole milk powder, skim milk powder and partly skimmed milk powder;
- Whey powder, modified whey products and casein products;
- Dairy protein concentrates;
- Recycled dairy food products (liquid milk, yogurt, infant formula); and
- Soybean meal.
Importers must provide test results indicating that ingredients originating from China - either directly, or through another country – do not contain detectable levels of melamine and cyanuric acid. Results of analysis must be provided at the time of importation. If the importer cannot demonstrate that the product meets these requirements, the product will be detained and referred to the CFIA for assessment.
