The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement on the ongoing political unrest in Thailand:
“Canada remains concerned over the ongoing political unrest in Thailand. A state of emergency is now in place at Suvarnabhumi and Don Meuang airports, which are still closed because of continuing political protests. It is unclear at this time when normal flight operations will resume. Canada continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the situation in line with democratic principles and the rule of law.
“The Embassy of Canada in Bangkok is monitoring the situation closely. On Saturday, November 29, the Ambassador and other Embassy officials visited with Canadian tour groups, representing about 200 Canadians. Thailand has modern medical facilities and any medical requirements such as prescription renewals and access to medical care are being addressed.
“The Embassy has established a call centre to answer enquiries from Canadians and has been issuing regular updates on developments to registered Canadians in Bangkok.
“Embassy staff are in contact with Canadian tour operators in Canada and in Bangkok, who are doing their utmost to minimize the inconvenience to clients and also exploring options for their safe return as soon feasible.
“Canadian consular officials also continue to work with Thai government officials to explore other options for helping Canadians to leave Bangkok safely.
“While the situation is extremely disruptive and travel is affected, Canadians are free to move throughout Bangkok. However, they are strongly advised to stay away from locations where protests have been held or are currently ongoing.
“Canadians should contact their airline, tour group or travel agent to make alternative arrangements to leave the country. Embassy officials are working to address any immediate requirements of Canadians stranded in Thailand.”
