Lockeport, Nova Scotia
The Government of Canada will invest over $63,000 in the waterfront development and branding of the Lockeport Loop area, which encompasses the Town of Lockeport and surrounding villages on Route 3. The project will involve the development of infrastructure designed to create economic opportunities for residents and local businesses, and enhance the area’s appeal to tourists. The project was announced today by Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret's on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).
“This investment will strengthen and diversify Lockeport and surrounding communities, resulting in considerable economic spin-offs,” said Minister Ashfield. “The revitalization of Lockeport’s waterfront district demonstrates our Government’s commitment to enhancing tourism capacity in rural communities and stimulating economic growth.”
Funding for this project will support the community in constructing historic look-out and visitor information kiosks, extending the harbour-front boardwalk, developing interpretive and directional signage, and creating heritage murals. The project will build on Lockeport’s existing assets including the famous Crescent Beach, downtown farmers’ market and boardwalk area.
In addition to ACOA’s $63,178 investment, the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development is also contributing $10,000 to the project.
“This important project will further establish Lockeport as a key tourism destination within its region, helping the area and industry become more competitive,” said Acting Minister for Economic Development, Jamie Muir. “It will enhance the region’s rich history and culture, attract new visitors, as well as contribute to building a vibrant community.”
The Lockeport area has adopted a tourist destination area strategic plan which, over time, will position the area as a key tourist destination in the region.
“Through this investment, the Lockeport Loop area will be better positioned to encourage visitors to leave Highway 103 and explore our many natural features and amenities,” said Lockeport Mayor Darian Huskilson.
ACOA’s investment is being made through the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
