OTTAWA, December 12, 2008 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Carolyn Layden-Stevenson, a Judge of the Federal Court, Trial Division, in Ottawa Ontario, is appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Appeal. She replaces Mr. Justice J.E. Sexton, who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Madam Justice Layden-Stevenson received a Bachelor of Teaching in 1970 and a Bachelor of Art in 1971 at the University of St. Thomas. She also received a Bachelor of Laws at the University of New Brunswick in 1984 and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 1985. Madam Justice Layden-Stevenson was a partner at Stevenson & Stevenson in Fredericton, New Brunswick from 1985 to 2002 and was appointed Judge of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division and ex offiicio member of the Court of Appeal in January 2002, and then Judge of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada in April 2002. Madam Justice Layden-Stevenson was a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Law Society of New Brunswick, York-Sunbury Law Society and New Brunswick Fredericton Area Legal Aid Appeals Committee.
This appointment is effective immediately.
