No. 249
The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today encouraged Canadians to stay safe over the holidays by getting the facts before travelling internationally.
“During the holiday season, I would like to remind the many Canadians travelling outside of the country to get informed before leaving on their vacations,” said Minister Cannon. “A better knowledge of travel reports and warnings, registration options and consular assistance can make a difference in helping Canadians increase their safety and security while abroad. Happy holidays and safe travel.”
To help Canadians stay safe, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada offers a number of checklists and tips for travellers to consult before they travel outside Canada. Business travellers as well as tourists and students should visit www.voyage.gc.ca/consular_home-en.asp for information to help them prepare for the unexpected abroad, or call 1-800-267-6788 (in Canada and the United States) or 613-944-6788. The website includes travel reports and warnings with the latest information on security and safety issues, as well as links to the Public Health Agency of Canada’s travel health advisories. It also includes contact information to use in the event of a consular emergency.
Travellers should carry a valid Canadian passport for themselves and their children. While some countries will accept other documents for identification purposes, a valid Canadian passport is the most acceptable document for proving identity and the right to re-enter Canada.
