GANDER, NL - On November 25, 2008 the provincial court at Gander convicted two individuals of offences in the cod and salmon fisheries.
Leo Aylward of St. Brendan’s was convicted of unauthorized offloading of cod. Mr. Aylward was fined $750 and the court ordered the forfeiture of 980 pounds of Atlantic cod.
During a covert surveillance of the stewardship cod fishery around St. Brendan’s Island in September 2008 DFO fishery officers from the Clarenville detachment observed Mr. Aylward offloading his catch without a dockside observer.
Travis Winter of Valleyfield was convicted of fishing in a scheduled salmon river without a salmon license and with giving false statements to a fishery guardian. Mr. Winter received a $600 fine and his rod and reel were also forfeited.
While on patrol near Gambo in July 2008 fishery guardians from the Clarenville detachment observed Mr. Winter fishing at Beach Pool, Mint Brook without a salmon license.
