OTTAWA, ONTARIO, January 9, 2009 - Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 279 voted yesterday to reject the latest offer from the City of Ottawa.
After receiving the results of the vote, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, contacted Mayor Larry O'Brien and ATU International Vice President Randy Graham to urge a quick resumption of negotiations.
The vote was ordered by Minister Ambrose on December 31, 2008. Now that the results are in and the offer has been rejected, it is the responsibility of both sides to redouble efforts to resolve their labour dispute.
"This strike has been difficult on all residents of the National Capital Region, and we want to see a resumption of transit service at the earliest possible date," said Minister Ambrose. "However, the onus is on the employer and union to bargain in good faith, demonstrate flexibility, and achieve a settlement."
Minister Ambrose reminded the parties that federal mediators stand ready to assist with negotiations. She also expressed her willingness to appoint an arbitrator to deal with any unresolved matters. Such an appointment can be made on the request of both parties. To date, the City and ATU have not availed themselves of this option.
"I would encourage the employer and union to seriously consider any option that will help them achieve an agreement," stated Minister Ambrose.
