Gatineau, Quebec, February 24, 2009 – The Government of Canada is investing in our economy, creating jobs today and building lasting infrastructure for the future. The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced an investment of $210,000 in the LaSalle Causeway Bascule Lift Bridge in Kingston, Ontario.
“This Government is helping Canadians weather the global downturn while ensuring Canada comes out of the recession stronger than ever,” said Minister Paradis. “This investment will rehabilitate an essential thoroughfare in the Kingston area while generating local jobs and contributing to the region’s economy.”
"Our government, during the pre-budget consultations, focused on listening to Canadians’ needs and then creating programs and initiatives that could be put in place without delay,“ said Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward-Hastings. “The infrastructure funding used for this project illustrates our government's commitment to delivering what is needed now to create safe and prosperous communities."
Public Works and Government Services Canada is the custodian of the LaSalle Causeway Bascule Lift Bridge. Situated near downtown Kingston, the bridge provides quick and direct access to the business core for many area commuters. The project involves the replacement of several steel girders and key structural elements over a two-month period, and will ensure that the bridge is able to serve the local community for many years to come. PWGSC has contracted Doornekamp Construction of Kingston, Ontario, to perform the necessary repairs.
The Government of Canada is investing almost $12 billion into new infrastructure funding for roads, bridges, broadband Internet access, electronic health records, laboratories and border crossings across the country.
