(Petitcodiac, New Brunswick) 13 March, 2009 - Residents of Petitcodiac will benefit from joint federal and provincial investments to improve local wastewater treatment services. Combined federal and provincial funding of almost $900,000 under the communities component of the Building Canada Fund was announced today by Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal and the Honourable Wally Stiles, Minister of Natural Resources. This project is an example of the commitment of both governments to strengthening the New Brunswick economy and improving the quality of life for its residents.
The project will enhance local facilities and services and create local jobs, at a time when the need for economic stimulus is greatest. Federal, provincial and municipal governments will each invest up to $448,604 in a project to upgrade the sanitary sewer collection system, ensuring that raw sewage from these areas will no longer be a threat to the surrounding environment.
“The Government of Canada is working together with provincial and municipal governments to deliver results to the people of New Brunswick with improvements and upgrades to community water and wastewater systems,” said Rob Moore, MP for Fundy Royal. “The federal investment of close to $450,000 will make a difference in Petitcodiac by improving the quality of life for the people who live and work here, protecting the environment and supporting economic growth for years to come.”
“Our government’s investment will help ensure that New Brunswick communities have quality infrastructure to protect residents' health and wellness and the environment,” said Minister Stiles. “Ensuring that we have strong infrastructure is vital in order for New Brunswick to remain positioned to be self-sufficient.” Minister Stiles spoke on behalf of Environment Minister Roland Haché.
“We are pleased to be working in partnership with both levels of government through the Building Canada Fund program to construct a new environmentally safe sewage disposal system,” said Mayor Peter Saunders. “This project demonstrates the commitment of governments to enhance local facilities, and indicates their willingness to work towards improving the environment and providing our residents with a healthier, more sustainable community.”
The project will extend the sanitary sewer collection system on Old Post Road and Crandall Road in order to eliminate ongoing discharge of 31 individual septic systems into the neighbouring Petitcodiac River. In addition, it will ensure that the wastewater that will be treated at the new lagoon that is presently under construction will result in effluent that meets New Brunswick Department of Environment requirements. Funding for this project is contingent on completion of all contractual agreements.
This project is one of 32 across the province that will get underway quickly thanks to a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $38 million. Together with municipal contributions, the total investment in local infrastructure improvements in New Brunswick during this first intake exceeds $57 million. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have taken steps to advance projects and flow money faster for targeted infrastructure projects in New Brunswick communities in the 2009 and 2010 construction seasons.
