OTTAWA — The Government of Canada has introduced regulatory changes that would improve air safety for Canadian travellers by prohibiting high-speed departures for aircraft. These proposed amendments were announced today by Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird.
"We're moving today to better protect air passengers and crew," said Minister Baird. "A key part of these amendments is focused on preventing incidents before they happen."
These amendments would limit the departure speed of aircraft to a maximum of 250 knots. In the event of a bird strike, high-speed departures can result in severe damage to aircraft and injuries to passengers and crew. The proposed regulatory amendments will reduce such risks and enhance aviation safety.
This would also harmonize the Canadian Aviation Regulations with International Civil Aviation Organization standards. The proposed amendments were published in Canada Gazette, Part I, on March 27, 2009. Interested parties have 30 days to make comments on the proposed changes.
