Pointe-des-Cascades, May 22, 2009 – Acting on behalf of Nathalie Normandeau, Deputy Minister of Quebec and Ministre des Affaires municipales et des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire, Lucie Charlebois, Member of the National Assembly for Soulanges and Assistant Government Whip, today joined the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, in announcing that the Village of Pointe-des-Cascades will receive an additional $250,000 in joint government funding, up from $715,854 to $965,854, under the Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program (CQIW).
This assistance will be used mainly to install a drinking water production well, a roughly 830-metre lead-in connection to the municipality’s existing treatment plant, along with various upgrades to the water reservoir and filtration plant. The project also involves adding a greensand treatment system for the removal of iron and manganese and the installation of measurement and monitoring equipment as well as other complementary works.
These upgrades will help Village of Pointe-des-Cascades improve and better track the quality of the water supply and meet the public’s current needs in terms of drinking water. Completion of this project will solve the problem of the obsolescence of certain infrastructures, achieve water disinfection objectives and comply with the requirements of the provincial water quality regulations contained in the Règlement sur la qualité de l’eau potable (RQEP). This work will benefit some 1,030 local residents.
Completion of this project will necessitate an increase in government funding, bringing the total eligible investment to $1,931,708 under component 1.2 of the CQIW. The governments of Quebec and Canada will now each contribute $482,927 toward the project, for a total of $965,854 in combined government funding, while the Village of Pointe-des-Cascades will also assume $965,854 of the project’s costs.
The Mayor of Pointe-des-Cascades, Francis Masse, is delighted with this project in that it will contribute to the well-being of local citizens and renew community infrastructure in a sustainable development perspective.
The Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works Program is aimed at helping communities repair, replace and build water supply, sewer and sewage treatment systems, develop projects that enhance, restore or construct facilities with economic, urban or regional side benefits. This aspect of the program is overseen by the Ministère des Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire. The program also supports highway systems and public transportation, under the responsibility of the Ministère des Transports du Québec and Infrastructures-Transport. Canada Economic Development administers the program on behalf of the Government of Canada. The program will generate work worth a total of over $1.686 billion.
