OTTAWA, May 14, 2009 – The Honourable Jay Hill, M.P. for Prince George-Peace River, and Government House Leader, expressed his pleasure today upon the passage and enactment of three additional government bills.
"This Government has been given a strong mandate from the Canadian people, a mandate we are fulfilling," said Minister Hill. "These three bills are an important part of our Government's legislative program, and demonstrate our commitment to ensuring the protection of our citizens, our environment and our economy."
The Governor General has signified Royal Assent for the following Bills:
- Bill C-5 (Indian Oil and Gas) which modernizes dated regulations, helps to ensure environmental protection of First Nation lands, increases regulatory compliance, and facilitates the collection of royalties and other monetary compensation due;
- Bill C-9 (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) which ensures the safety and security of Canadians whenever dangerous goods are imported, handled or transported in Canada, while also maintaining trade and market access to further economic prosperity; and
- Bill S-3 (Energy Efficiency Act) which gives regulatory powers to the Minister of Natural Resources in order to promote the efficient use of energy in the Canadian market place.
Since its re-election, the Government of Canada has been successfully implementing its legislative program on behalf of Canadians - above and beyond the multi-billion dollar stimulus package contained in the Economic Action Plan. Fifty-eight sitting days into the current session of parliament, the government has introduced 36 bills. Including today's bills, a total of 9 have been granted Royal Assent, and 7 additional bills have already passed either the House of Commons or Senate.
"Our Government is working hard to make Parliament functional and productive. Our record thus far is clear evidence that we are achieving this goal in the interests of all Canadians," said Minister Hill. "We are committed to ensuring this era of parliamentary productivity continues - particularly at a time of global economic uncertainty when Canadians expect parliamentarians to put partisanship aside and work to deliver real results for real people."
