Sherbrooke, Thursday, May 7, 2009 – Last Tuesday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officers arrested a resident of the Saint-François-Xavier-de-Brompton area, in the Estrie region, after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted a parcel containing one litre of GBL, a controlled substance used in the production of GHB, which is also known as the "rape drug".
The parcel originating from Poland was initially intercepted on April 29 by a CBSA officer at the Ville St-Laurent mail sorting centre. The parcel was handed over to the RCMP. After a brief investigation, the RCMP officers identified the person responsible for this attempt to import a controlled substance. Laurent Corriveau, 54, was then arrested at his residence in the Estrie region. Corriveau, who is known to police, is facing charges of illegal importation of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). He will also be charged with drug possession for the purpose of trafficking and with drug production, as a marihuana grow operation was found inside his residence.
GBL is a psychotropic substance used in the production of GHB, a drug that can induce coma, respiratory disorders and memory losses. The RCMP wishes to remind citizens that they must remain vigilant against this type of improvised drug. In its legal form, GBL is generally used as a base in the production of paint solvent.
Drug enforcement is an RCMP priority. In this regard, we encourage residents in the Estrie region to report any information on individuals or groups of individuals suspected to be involved in drug-related illicit activity by calling 819 564-5770 or their local police department.
