The Restigouche Tourism Association (RTA) has been awarded the 2009 Tourism Atlantic Technology Award for its innovative efforts to better serve the community, tourism officials, and also to attract more visitors to the area.
The award presentation took place last evening at the Cultural Centre in Caraquet as part of the Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick's (TIANB) annual conference.
"The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is proud to be part of a project that recognizes the success of tourism operators working to achieve best practices in technology," said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). "Tourism operators who are dedicated to improving their technology capabilities are better positioned to compete in an on-line global environment."
In 2004, the Tourism Atlantic branch of ACOA, along with the four provincial Tourism Industry Associations, created the technology award to recognize a tourism operator in each Atlantic province for innovative and creative usage of technology to improve and complement their tourism practices.
The Restigouche Tourism Association participated in programs like the Internet Marketing Awareness Workshop and the TourismTechnology.com Mentoring Program offered through TIANB. This enabled them to acquire new skills and significantly improve an outdated website and maximize its regional marketing and promotional efforts.
As part of the website upgrades, RTA has developed a new four-seasons inspired logo and slogan for the region. As a creative touch, the colours of the website have been programmed to change with the seasons. The redesigned site is now better positioned to act as the principal source of information for the Restigouche region.
The criteria for this award states that recipients must be members of their respective provincial tourism industry associations; have incorporated technology initiatives that enhance their business practices; have successfully demonstrated the basic principle recognized by the award; and are willing to participate in promoting their achievements to other operators in Atlantic Canada.
