Government of Canada funding of more than $41,000 was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) to upgrade the Gateway Labrador Complex in Labrador City.
This investment will enable Gateway Labrador Inc. to make improvements to the complex. Upgrades include installing a lift station and concrete pump chamber allowing the facility to link into municipal infrastructure. The project will also allow for the provision of adequate washroom facilities to accommodate both the general public and tourists.
"The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is pleased to support Gateway Labrador Inc. in upgrading the Gateway Complex and enhancing tourism infrastructure in Labrador City," said Minister Ashfield. "This investment will ensure the year round, operation of the region's primary source of tourism information for visitors and local residents alike."
"It is essential that the region have a primary hub of tourism information to showcase the culture and history of Labrador for visiting tourists," said Jason Ste. Marie, President, Gateway Labrador Inc. "This project addresses our current infrastructure challenges, supports the economic plan for the region and has received the support of various organizations within our region."
The Gateway Labrador Complex houses artifacts, interpretative displays, a craft shop, and a small theatre for interpretive audio/visual presentations.
The Government of Canada is providing $41,395 to the project through ACOA'S Innovative Communities Fund which focuses on investments that lead to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities.
