Quispamsis, New Brunswick - Quispamsis residents are another step closer to benefiting from a new environmentally-friendly, multi-use facility following a groundbreaking ceremony today involving all three levels of government. Rob Moore, Member of Parliament for Fundy Royal; the Honourable Mary Schryer, Minister of Health; and Quispamsis Mayor Murray Driscoll attended today's ceremony.
"Our government is committed to supporting projects like this that strengthen the economic foundation of our communities and improve the quality of life for the people who live and work in them," said MP Moore, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). "Our support - through ACOA - for this multi-use business and leisure facility will enable a range of economic activities for residents throughout the Kennebecasis Valley and neighbouring communities."
"Today's ceremony demonstrates the importance of this community project for Quispamsis and the Kennebecasis Valley," Schryer said. "Investing in important infrastructure projects will improve the quality of life for the residents of Quispamsis and the entire region, which will help us work toward our goal of self- sufficiency." She spoke on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
"Construction is ramping up, shovels are officially in the ground and next year the doors will open - we"re ready to go," said Mayor Driscoll. "This morning's event was a culmination of the commitment and tenacity of many who recognized the long-term benefits of building this facility. There's an energy here in Quispamsis, and the qplex will be the place where this energy can thrive and be shared by all. We are grateful to both the federal and provincial governments for providing the substantial funding injection needed to make this project happen."
The qplex will be one of the first facilities in Atlantic Canada to be designed and constructed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) standards. The facility will allow Quispamsis to offer additional activities and events to its growing population as well as to stimulate the local and regional economy by helping the Town attract business.
The Government of Canada announced its contribution of $3 million towards the $21 million project through ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund in February 2009; while the Province of New Brunswick has also announced its investment of $3 million.
